51 - Coffee Chat with Heather Klassen of Mugging Whales Coffee Co.

When whales display an engaging curiosity and choose to swim within close proximity to a boat, this behaviour is known as “whale mugging”.

In episode 51, Genny spoke with Heather Klassen, who owns Mugging Whales Coffee with her husband Jim Born, about how they started their coffee business and why they chose that name for their business.

Heather said the idea for Mugging Whales began on their vacation to Maui, Hawaii in 2018. While they were there, they had the amazing experience of being “mugged” by whales and enjoying the show while stuck for almost two hours, waiting until the whales swam away.

Coffee is a passion of theirs so they spent time visiting the little coffee shops and especially enjoyed the Maui coffee. When they got home, they wanted to pursue their passion so they decided to start their own coffee business. When deciding what to call their business, they both decided that Mugging Whales was the perfect name!

A micro-roaster in Winnipeg, Heather and Jim source specialty coffees from countries in the area known as the “Bean Belt” that has the best growing climates for coffee and roast their coffee in small batches once a week so it’s fresh.
