56 - Chat with Colin Mathieson, 4-Time Paralympian, World Champion Medalist and Social Worker

A Paralympian is an athlete who competes in the Paralympic Games, and who has bodily differences and different types of disabilities. But according to Braun Ability, that definition doesn’t come close to explaining what defines them. A Paralympian is courageous. They have heart and soul to the core. They overcome obstacles that the average person will never understand.

In episode 56, Genny spoke with Winnipeg-born Colin Mathieson, a seasoned veteran in wheelchair athletics, who competed in his first Olympics at the 1996 Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal in the 4 x 4 Relay. A 4-time Paralympian with Canada, Colin has competed on the national team since 1995, attending every Summer Olympic Games since then (with the exception of Athens in 2004).

Born with Spina Bifida, his beginning in the sport was inspired by watching wheelchair athletes compete in the Manitoba Marathon when he was 9 years old, watching from the steps of his house. He was also inspired by Rick Hansen’s “Man in Motion” world tour.

Colin still races but has also pursued a career in social work, currently working for the Deer Lodge Centre. A coffee aficionado, he shares his love of coffee and Starbucks with Genny!
