114 - The Mountain is You

114 - The Mountain is You

“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.”

Sir Edmund Hillary, New Zealand mountaineer and explorer, who along with his Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, were the first to set foot on the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1954.

In this episode, Genny spoke about the book, “The Mountain is You” by Brianna Wiest. She discovered an excerpt of Brianna’s book posted on Instagram and was so taken by her words that she wanted to buy a copy of her book. However, Genny chose instead to listen to the book on Audible during her morning walks.

In that book, Brianna spoke about self-sabotage; how we use coping mechanisms such as perfectionism, pride, or overthinking to deal with our unmet needs or suppressed emotions. It’s about identifying your behaviours to try and deal with those unmet needs without relying on those coping mechanisms. And it’s about paying attention to those triggers that produce feelings of anger, sadness, shame, or embarrassment that can stop us from fulfilling our goals.

Genny spoke about why people climb mountains. It’s because it is there. It’s a challenge and presents great difficulties. Humans typically delight in overcoming obstacles. And, to use climbing a mountain as a metaphor for life, it requires endurance, persistence and willpower.

To close, Genny encourages us to climb that mountain. It will be hard but it can change your life.
