The Art Of Gathering

The Art Of Gathering

Picnics, family reunions, coffee dates. These are just a few of the many ways we get together with each other. But instead of calling it a “get together or even call it by what it is, why not think of it as a “gathering”?----more----

In this episode, Genny talks about the importance of “gathering”. To her, gathering means bringing people together. It sounds more inclusive, and it’s an opportunity to really connect with each other. She shares a story of a recent impromptu gathering at the home of friends of hers and her husband Frank. As Genny describes it, it was a magical evening. After a sumptuous family-style dinner, everyone sat around and talked and drank pot after pot of espresso and French Press into the night. And the beauty of it was that no one left the table. Everyone was content to sit and converse with each other. ----more----

As Genny started to learn more about gathering, she discovered a book called, “The Art of Gathering: Why We Meet and Why It Matters” by Priya Parker. In her book, Priya says that events flourish when they are built on thoughtfulness, structure, curiosity, and generosity of spirit. What’s interesting about this book is that it was published in 2018, before Covid. And what’s really interesting is that before Covid, Priya was saying that gatherings should have a purpose. There should be a reason why you want to get together. And if Covid taught us anything, it’s that we can’t take for granted the opportunities to meet and to gather with each other, and to spend time with each other.----more----
